"Godzilla" director to helm Star Wars spin-off in 2016

Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has officially joined a Star Wars stand-alone, spin-off film that's set to be released on December 16, 2016 (almost exactly 1 year after Star Wars VII).

Edwards is also known for directing the indie movie Monsters, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where two oddballs work together to escape an infected zone.

So, what does this say about the tone of this unknown spin-off film? Well, we can guess that it'll have a dark-ish tone, but don't expect any kind of Yoda-zilla tearing up Coruscant (though I would thoroughly enjoy that). The closest thing Star Wars has to Godzilla is the Zillo Beast, an impregnable, repitllian monster that caused all sorts of trouble on Malastare, and then again on Coruscant when it was brought there for study. Though it appeared in 2 memorable Clone Wars episodes, the chances of it appearing on the big screen are slim.

Yoda is currently one of the most likely candidates for a stand-alone film, but I'm personally rooting for a Jango or Boba Fett film. Both of the characters have rich and depressing histories that could surely be incorporated into films. Jango's story could be centered around his adventures with the Mandalorians (and their death at the hands of Jedi), and Boba's could center on the beginnings of his career as a bounty hunter, as well as his attempts to get revenge on Mace Windu for killing his father.

What do you think about the new directorial announcement? Who do you want to get a stand-alone film? Tell me in the comments, and may the force be with you all.
